The poems of Bernice Wood
I take liberty and poetic license
To make my jottings make some sense
Do me just a very small favor
Smile when you point out a error.

Faith and Church Life

Hi-Five
At greeting time on Sunday morning
I note that kids don't really enjoy all that hand shaking
But if I say gimme five
They smile and seem to come alive
We slap palms and now we are friends
That's the way this story ends

God Can
Only God can make a caterpillar into a butterfly
He can take some sun and rain and make a rainbow in the sky
He can turn an acorn into a mighty oak tree
He can do the same for you or me

The End
Some have said the year 2000 would  be the end date
Now I am hearing 2012 will be the date
That has never been one of life's persistent questions
But the world does sound a lot like Revelations
But the Bible says not to worry abut tomorrow
Many of our problems we only borrow

New Data
I like to share interesting data with you
Eves cell phone number was I  8 1 2

Predictions
We cannot predict the future
Of that we can be sure
Just when you think everything is going swell
That's the day the cat falls in the well
You just have to go back to the Drawing Board or Plan B
Trust the Lord and whatever will be will be

Sunday Morning
The preacher said for us all to stand
To do that, we could use a helping hand
When he said we could all be seated
We dropped back down our energy depleted
The songs were on a giant screen
But not much help when sight is not too keen
The sermon which by now we badly needed
All about right attitude should be heeded

Overkill
Our preacher has many jokes and stories to drive home a Bible truth
Sunday he was reminding us how salt enhances food
I know this may sound silly
But I was thinking about this and put too much salt in a pot of chili
Moral is very plain to see
Listen to your preacher but also check the recipe

On the Brighter Side
We all have more than enough to eat
All kinds of shoes to wear on our feet
Two cars, two bathrooms and two TVs
Our homes are warm and air conditioned
The church of our choice that we can attend
Thine is the kingdom and the power
A God to turn to any hour

This Is My Story
I answered that knock at my heart
When I was twelve and just getting my start
I feel it was the secret to my full and happy life
It's been my help through times of strife
With the help of a Christian mate
I feel our three children have shared our faith

Church Nappers
Our preacher likes a cool auditorium
If it's warm it means sleep for some
Adron says he may not realize
Some hear better when they close their eyes

Church Bulletin
I dropped my bulletin at church yesterday
All ten pages went every which way
As I was down on the floor
I kept thinking I hope I never do that any more!

Modern Music
Modern music seems to have caught a virus
I call it repetitious
One short phrase you can learn by heart
When to quit is the tricky part
You'll know its almost over
When the leader says now once more

My Talent
I used to play the organ at a small hometown church
I seemed to have about the right touch
I was never asked to play at musicals
But I think I was pretty good at funerals

Necktie Countdown
Yesterday at church
I did an unofficial necktie search
Out of something like 80 men
There was maybe a total of ten
There seems to be a definite trend
Coat and tie era seems about to end
Replaced by a more comfortable and casual style
You can throw those ties that bind
Into the Goodwill pile

John Lyttle

He seemed born to preach the gospel
Sermon after sermon without being dull
He could grab your attention
Say the right thing on any occasion
He loved to preach and loved to sing too
Songs of his own he wrote quite a few
He made his own lyrics
About life's joys and conflicts
To end with a quip, I know he would laugh
He died leaning on his staff.

My Conversion
I have done my share of complaining
About the change in church singing
Then I talked to a friend who has several grandchildren
I must say I've had a conversion
When they come to spend the night
They all sing choruses instead of fight

Our Place in the Pew
For 45 years we've attended this church
No better place if you'd search and search
We sit on the left-- down about halfway
We slide to the middle of the row in case
Some of the Wood clan should fill up the space
There are children of all ages everywhere
Makes for a wonderful atmosphere
They'll be our able leaders some day
Maybe our preacher-- who can say

Pajama Parties
Sleepovers were called pajama parties way back when
There were no videos to rent back then
We made up our own songs and skits
One I remember went like this
Roo tee-toot! Roo tee-toot!
We are the girls from the Institute
We don't smoke
We don't chew
We don't go with boys who do
OUR CLASS WON THE BIBLE!

Rose Acre Farm
What a nice surprise-not a jargon
A scripture inside my egg carton!
It would be an educated guess
That's been a part of their success
Selling eggs both far and near
Staying in business year after year
Right here in Americana
There's more than corn in Indiana
"This is the day that the Lord hath made
Let us rejoice and be glad"

Been There - Done That
Let me tell you what all I've "been through"
Just in the last year or two
Things just seemed to happen to me
Things I couldn't possibly foresee
Surgery by an expert of high risk cases
After searching in lots of well-known places
Pulled from the back seat of our Crown Vic
By the jaws of life following a wreck
Lost the best friend I ever knew
Just a few of the things I've "been through"
All the good things would take a lot longer
Family ties grow stronger and stronger
We just had a whole "famn damily" gathering
What a lot of laughing and remembering
Love for my family,. and faith in God renewed
Makes life worth what I've "been through"

My ABC's of Life
Appetite , unless you happen to have the flu
Makes us ask what's on the menu
Book to read after you've been fed
The Bible is still the most often read
Church is where you can charge your battery
Where you go depends on your family ancestry
Dreams can come true for goodness sake
It just means you have to stay awake
Educate a woman
    And you educate a family
Faith in the gospel of John
Gives us the hope of living on and on
Golden Rule makes life a gem
Whatsoever ye would that men should do to you,
do ye even so to them
Humor is a definite must
Everything is funny unless it happens to us
Imagination is more important than knowledge
Einstein's success is a good way to judge
Joys shared with others
    Are joys made double
Kindred spirits are all around
They are close and their love will abound
Laughter lightens dreary tasks
    He who laughs, lasts
Money makes the world go round
Without it you are homeward bound
Nature is something from heaven above
The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof
Opportunity is what we call our land
There is no other quite so grand
Peace of God passeth all understanding
Peace on earth is a goal worth attaining
Quotations are used by people like me
They make my meanings easier to see
Reputation is better than a precious ointment
    Better than an expensive ornament
Sleep according to Proverbs again
Yet a little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the hands
Thanksgiving --the usual things for the feast
Relatives , a dozen at least
United we stand divided we fall
Why don't we all just meet at the mall
Vacation---no one needs one more
Than one who just returned quite poor
Wishes won't wash dishes so never shirk
    When wishes won't work---work
Xxxes sometimes stands for kisses
An excellent way to fill these spaces
Yards are absolutely necessary
Without one we'd have some time to tarry
Zeal for living may not always last
We can remember the fun in the past

Birthdays
The Bible would call us well-stricken in years
We have out-lived most of our peers
There is still some happiness in life
We're still together as man and wife
We don't worry over much
About doctor bills and such
Our children are all happy and healthy
That makes us feel so very wealthy
Car wrecks, surgeries and wars
All are nothing now but scars
We ask the Lord for His guiding light
Give us strength for come what might

The Bible
The Bible says thou shalt not covet
That is not as easy as you may think
When I have rabbit
And she has mink
Our house is sided
Theirs is bricked
I wouldn't trade for a million dollars
Half a million ---- Yes

Wise Man Forgetteth
It was cold last Sunday at FCC
Spirits were high it seemed to me
The choir was at their very best
The solo I will never forget
Comes time for the sermon by Pastor Wise
Who is just as smart as his name implies
He looked at his wife with a funny grin
She knew right away the fix he was in
The sermon he had so carefully scripted
Was still on his desk where he left it
She left in a hurry while he adlibbed
He can do that with his natural glib
Peggy returned with the soul-winning hum dinger
We all agreed as we sat down to dinner.

Our Preacher
Our preacher's name is Dale
He has quite a wit
If his wife Peggy would let us call her Chip
You got it ---------that's it !!!!!!
